Valeriana officinalis is an herbaceous perennial herb. Its rhizomes are steam distilled and collected before flowering. It grows to a height of 3 ft. The plant has a dense head of clustered fragrant white, sometimes slightly pink flowers, which bloom in late spring and early summer. Valerian European Essential Oil is steam distilled from the roots. The color of the oil is olive green to olive brown. The Oil has warm, woody, balsam-like, musky aroma.
Note: The aroma of Valerian Oil can be pungent and unpleasant, depending on the distillation, origin of the oil and the age of the oil. If you find the aroma to be hard to tolerate, the aroma can be offset by blending it at low dilution with other essential oils, such as Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Vetiver, Patchouli and Sweet Orange.
Fact: Valerian root’s strong odor attracts cats like catnip. According to folklore, in 18th century apothecaries the quality of valerian root was determined by the way in which cats reacted to it.
