Profile

There are over 700 species of Geranium cataloged around the world. Depending upon their geographical location there are slight variations in odor, color, and levels of constituents within the oils. The Rose Geranium species is native to select locations in Africa. Only a few Geraniums are known for their production of essential oil, the most common is Pelargonium graveolens. Geranium and Rose Geranium come from different varieties of the same species. It has also been called rose-scented geranium, sweet-scented geranium, or old-fashioned rose geranium. The plant has velvety, plush leaves and flowers that bloom pale pink or almost white. The oil is steam distilled from the fragrant leaves. The color of the oil is dark green, brownish, or brownish yellow. Rose Geranium has a slightly more floral scent than Geranium. Its aroma has been described as sweet, floral, and “rosey.”
